This tradition derives from St. Francis of Assisi’s love for animals. Francis was a Catholic friar and preacher who lived in the twelfth century and founded the Franciscan Order. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, believed God’s love covered all creation and gave each creature dignity. Legend recounts Francis preaching a sermon to the birds, exhorting: “My sister birds, you owe much to God, and you must always and in everyplace give praise to Him.”
Dominion Academy hosts this event to affirm the ways all parts of creation—including animals— bring praise to God. Pet owners may bring their caged or leashed animal friends to be blessed.
